SabakaSling

Ethics

Some people think that to extend the life of a disabled animal is cruel - they prefer to have the animal euthanized. It is not my intention to criticize their very painful decision. On the other hand, if it is possible to maintain an acceptable quality of life, what harm is then done, if pain and suffering can be effectively minimized? While both ideas have merit, few loving dog owners can really hope their momentous decisions to be this cut-and-dried. Most of us will have to suffer through our decisions in the cavernous "gray area" that exists between these opposing viewpoints.

I think that, when my best buddies time comes, I will be comforted -- I truly believe we both will -- by the thought that we did everything possible to ease his pain and maintain an enjoyable, joyous standard of life that has benefitted both of us for going-on 5 years. There is a closeness that grows from our mutual dependancy that we would never have known by any other means.

It is my sincerest hope that you and your best buddy may find the same tranquility of spirit that Sabaka and I have found. And that your, choices -- although never easy -- will be choices that will leave lasting, joyous memories, without regrets.

Best wishes
