A good diet is essential for optimum health. Sabaka's diet consists of both a high-quality dry food and a home-made "puppy loaf." His dry food is either Nutro Natural Choice or, when I can afford the extra expense or he has not been feeling well, Flint River Ranch Senior Formula.
The recipe for "puppy loaf" is a follows:
Ingredients
- Frozen Ground Turkey - 3 pounds
- White Rice, uncooked - 1 cup
- Whole Eggs - 2 large
- Instant Mashed Potatoes - 1/2 cup
- Cooking Oil - 2 tablespoons
- Salt and Pepper - to taste
Preparation
- Thaw frozen turkey in refrigerator.
- In a 2-quart saucepan, combine 2 cups water with white rice. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and steam over very low heat for 20 minutes.
- In a heavy skillet, brown thawed turkey in 2 tablespoons cooking oil, adding water as necessary to prevent sticking. Add salt and pepper to taste. Partially cover and cook about 20 minutes.
- When Turkey is browned, remove skillet from heat and stir in instant mashed potatoes. Cover tightly to allow potatoes to absorb liquid.
- Combine turkey/potato mixture with cooked rice in a large mixing bowl. Add water to combination if it is too dry.
- Add two large eggs to previously combined ingredients, after allowing mixture to cool slightly.
- Place resulting mixture into a large microwave-safe cooking container. Microwave on high for approximately 10 minutes or until mixture reaches 180 degrees, rotating bowl once during cooking.
- Allow to cool before serving.
- Keep loaf refrigerated. Can also be frozen.
Serving size:
About 1 cup for large dogs.
Apple Cider Vinegar
An old-time natural tonic for maintaining good health, apple cider vinegar is rich in potassium and many other minerals. As beneficial for dogs as it is for humans, Sabaka gets two tablespoons apple cider vinegar mixed-in with his food at every meal. Most dogs do not object to the flavor. Buy an organic apple cider that is unfiltered and still cloudy with apple pulp. As an alternative, mineral supplements such as Km are excellent, but very expensive.
